Free Scrunchie Pattern

I’ve had such an awesome response for my soft crochet scrunchies!

I remember when scrunchies were popular in the late 1980s and early 1990s.  My great aunt would crochet scrunchies for me and ship them to me. I still have those scrunchies today, because I’m a total packrat and also because I thought the absolute world of my great aunt Mary.

When I started making them, I found multiple patterns that I liked certain aspects of.  So, I decided to create one that worked for me!


This crochet pattern is relatively easy!

You will need:

Bernat velvet yarn
Size I - 5.5 mm crochet hook
Yarn needle
Scissors
Hair tie elastic
Tape (optional)

Stitches:

CH - chain
SC - single crochet
DC - double crochet
Lemon peel stitch - repeat SC and DC

Instructions-

Slip knot.

Chain 50

On the second chain from the hook, single crochet.  SC in each chain all the way across.

Turn your work after you finish the 49 SC across.

Chain 1.

*DC in the first stitch and then SC in the second stitch. Repeat lemon peel stitch across.*

Turn your work and CH 1.

Repeat (**)

Turn your work and CH 1.

Repeat (**)

Flip work over.

Place hair tie at the corner of the work.

Insert hook in first stitch, leaving the hair tie underneath, enclosing the hair tie.

Continue to SC all the way down to close it, pushing the joining parts around the tie as you crochet.

Make sure that your work doesn’t get twisted though!

When you get to the end, chain one and cut off a tail.

The scrunchie is still open at this point.

I always use tape to insert my yarn into the needle. It’s an awesome hack that my great grandmother taught my mom. Remove the tape after the needle is threaded.

Start sewing the scrunchie ends together. This yarn is so forgiving, so it doesn’t have to be perfect!

Double knot with the tail you had with your original slip knot and cut.

Now you have a fun scrunchie!
